Invasive Species:
Zebra Mussels
Glazed Porcelain
Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) are native to Europe and most likely arrived in North America in untreated ballast water from shipping. These zebra mussels were collected in Cayuga Lake, where they first detected in 1991. The Zebra mussel and another invasive mussel, the Quagga Mussel, have irrevokably changed the ecosystem of the lakes.
Cast in porcelain, these sculptures recreate these bottom dwelling filter feeders in the refinement of delicate white ceramic and invoke the complex history of intercontinental trade.
