Invasive Species: Spotted Lanterfly

Animations and Cyanotype Prints

The Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is native to China and was first detected in Pennsylvania in 2014. They are sap feeders which feed on a wide range of trees and crop plants, with Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima), also orginally from China, being a preferred host.

These works are from observations of the Spotted Lanternfly at a known DEC site in Central NY. The animation is hand drawn from original footage, and the cyanotypes are created from flattened specimens.
